Steven put up a great time earlier this year, he set a high bar to clear!
I hitched a ride from family down to Philly and was on the trail by 4:50 a.m., so I could get some miles in before it warmed up. About 48 degrees at start time, according to the PECO building.
I hit three trail closures/detours along the way - under the Chestnut Bridge in Philly, next to the SEPTA station in Norristown, and then just past Phoenixville. Fortunately there were quick detours (including running on the train tracks in Philly for a short bit), only added 0.1 or 0.2 miles I bet.
I filled up my water (2 liter hydration bladder) at the Betzwood Trailhead near Valley Forge past mile 22. Definitely needed all of it, as it got hotter on the exposed part of the trail over the last 6-7 miles (about 62 degrees I think). Took in about 1200 calories (PBJ, 5 gels, apple, Snickers).
I was able to hold an 8:35-8:40 pace for the first 20 miles, and then my quads started hurting. I hit calf cramps in the final miles, so my pace slowed closer to 9:30-9:45.
Family met me in Parker Ford, which was a great treat. Overall, I imagine this record is gettable. Looking forward to seeing how soon somebody goes sub-5!
