I’d only done the last couple of miles of this route before, so decided it would be a great Easter holiday adventure. It was a mission just getting to the start (thanks to train delays and cancellations), after leaving my car in Rye. Great route, with excellent signage and information boards. I still managed to get distracted and overshoot one turn, though.
Started with a jog/walk strategy from the start. Lots of pregnant ewes and young lambs in fields meant that I walked quite a lot that I would otherwise jogged. It was bone dry underfoot, with a fair chunk of the route looking like it could get muddy in the Autumn/Winter. I didn’t spot any taps en route, so anyone wanting to do it unsupported in warm weather would need to carry plenty of fluid; I got through 2 litres. From 10 miles you pass pubs and villages that you could top up supplies in, if you were going for the self-supported variation.
The gpx adds a bonus mile to the official route, finishing in the old town. It does mean you can celebrate with ice cream/coffee/cake when you’re done, though.
