The morning started out humid, cloudy, and very quiet - I encountered just a few groups along the trail all day despite it being a holiday weekend. I added a little unnecessary mileage by accidentally taking the side trail to the lightning creek boat-in campsite and backtracking to the Desolation Peak trail. By the time I began the climb to the lookout, the sun was out and it was hot. At the lookout, I rested a bit in the shade and snacked before heading back down. Unfortunately my legs began cramping on the descent and I realized I was dehydrated. The return was slow going, but the motivation to finish helped me move a little quicker in the last few miles. It was a great feeling to finish as I had been quite nervous to do this distance for the first time as a solo outing. I had not planned to submit a FKT, but was inspired to submit my time after learning about the Women who FKT project. Although I ran unsupported, I am very grateful for my husband who woke up early to drive me to the trailhead and came back to pick me up at the finish!
