Superstition Peak 5057/ the Superstition Benchmark is such a gorgeous high point along the ridge line. I wanted to run Superstition Peak from both Carney Springs and Hieroglyphics and compare the two. I ran Superstition from Carney on January 10th, summiting in 1 hour 17 minutes and round trip in 2 hours and 26 minutes. The following day I ran the shorter but burlier route round trip from Hieroglyphics. I summited a few minutes later than the day before in 1 hr 21 minutes- possibly from fatigued legs but I also diverted from the Ridgeline trail accidentally on the way up for a few minutes. I made better time on the way down although I fell pretty hard just two miles from the trailhead busting a finger and managing to get a black eye. I ran the last portion at a much more mellow pace but in the end I did run the peak round trip a full two minutes faster which is why I'm summiting my time from the Hieroglyphics TH rather than Carney Springs.
My two cents: I think the route from Carney Springs is a bit easier for a number a reasons. For one the trail is easier to follow having seen more foot traffic and less braided social trails to get lost on. Second I think it's a better grade for running and has less loose rocks than the Hieroglyphics trail. You do however need a State Trust Land recreation permit to start from Carney (easy to do online). The Hieroglyphics trail is quite rocky, loose, narrow, and a lot harder to find a fast flow on. The Ridgeline trail connecting to the summit seems to have seen more wildfire damage as well making the trail a little harder to follow. All that being said, Hieroglyphics is a full mile shorter round trip so ... choose your trailhead wisely.
I also want to note that there is a social trail along the south ridge of Superstition that is probably the most direct way up and down however it's not an official trail and it seems it would be pretty ethics to use for a record, especially since you are traveling in a preserve.
