I remember having the whole day free and wanting to do a new to me trail run somewhere a little further from home. I looked through my CFPA Walk Book, finding a couple options, and eventually I decided on the Iron Trail. I didn’t really look closely at the specifics, and for some reason, I thought it was going to be a 14ish mile out and back. I parked at the northern start point and headed out, running past a tour group that was happening at the Beckley Furnace Industrial Park. I remember hitting that big hill at the start of the run and wondering what I got myself into. I followed the blue blazes to Canaan Mountain Road, where I looked at my watch and noticed that the trail seemed to continue just down the road. I didn’t realize at the time that the second trail was actually a different trail by the same name! After leaving Canaan Mountain Road, I followed orange blazes and cairns to the Stone Mountain summit. At the top, I thought the trail continued on, so I spent quite a while wandering around looking for where it continued before turning around. I was careful not to step on any of the fragile moss!
