The round-trip FKT follows the traditional La Luz route from the trailhead to Sandia Crest. This matches the description of the route, though not the GPX file. It’s the same route locals typically run for La Luz and where the official La Luz race used to end.

(Note: the segment begins slightly after the actual trailhead. My attempt started at the La Luz sign in the trailhead parking lot—see completion photo.)
I started at 6:49 a.m. on a Tuesday and saw only a few people on the trail. Conditions were perfect for a run. The rocky switchbacks slowed me down—I ended up hiking those sections since footing was tricky. Definitely not the fastest time this route has seen (Jeff Cuno holds the men’s record on the segment at 2:06), but it was a fun morning out on the mountain!
