I'd been eyeing this route for a while because it combines my love of peak bagging and big vert days into one adventure. After looking over the route, I downloaded and followed the GPX track from the previous men's FKT holder, Matthew, which made the navigation much more manageable than starting completely from scratch. think what makes this route so difficult isn't necessarily the climbing, it's the lack of established trails and the continuous navigation. Roughly 70% of the route does not have a trail, so you're constantly making route decisions rather than simply following a path. Two of the peaks required some bushwhacking through trees while two others involved steep ascents and descents across loose scree. I carried 1.5 liters of water and 1 liter of Tailwind, which ended up not being enough. New Mexico is currently in the middle of a heat wave, and temperatures were still around 85°F at 10,000 feet, making the day much hotter than I anticipated. I would strongly recommend carrying more fluids than you think you'll need if attempting this route in similar conditions. I do think this route could be completed significantly faster on a second attempt. Having already learned the best lines, where to avoid unnecessary climbing, and how the terrain connects between peaks would save a considerable amount of time. That said... I don't think I'll be doing it again anytime soon. It was an incredible day in the mountains, but definitely one that earned a long recovery afterward.
