This is probably my favorite quick summit in the Eastern Sierra, because you get a little bit of everything: views, lakes, mountains, altitude, a summit, a lot of very runnable terrain, scree, and some easy scrambling. This was my third time doing Starr, and my fastest time round trip, but not my fastest time to the summit due to the snow that was still hanging out at Mono Pass.
As always, I started and stopped my watch with both feet on the pavement at the TH. The jog up to Mono Pass from the Ruby Lake junction is just the best. Mono Pass was still pretty socked in with snow and I post-holed to the crotch a few times, costing some minutes. I got to the summit a couple minutes slower than my 2025 time, hung out for a couple minutes to enjoy it, then ran back down, beating my downhill time from 2025.
This for sure goes sub 2 without snow, the right line to the summit (there are a lot to choose from), not hanging out at the summit, and early or late in the day when there are fewer hikers/backpackers on trail.
There is no roundtrip Strava segment for Starr, but there are a full ascent AND descent segments from the TH.
