A chilly, windy day on the Sugar River Trail today. Temperature at start (9:45 AM) was around 20°F but wind chill brought down the real-feel temp to about 8°F. Having to layer up (2 shirts and joggers over full-leg tights) probably inhibited movement a tiny bit compared to a warmer run, but it proved vital to dealing with the wind. I was dropped at the New Glarus trailhead with my fuel (2 gels, 2 packs of fruit snacks, an energy bar and my 2 bottles of coconut water-based electrolyte drink) and ran from there to the end in Brodhead, which is conveniently about 2 miles from my home. Started out fairly easy, averaging around 7:10-7:20/mi for the first half. Picked it up after downing a gel and an energy bar and progressed down to 6:30/mi or so over the next quarter, reaching almost 6:00/mi at the end. Consumed all of my fuel starting around mile 8, trying to follow regular intervals at the mile markers. Only saw 1 other hiker out today, just past Albany at mile 18 or so. After finishing, I ran the 2-ish miles back home, totaling 24 for the day. Had a great time today setting a new record on my home trail!
