Setting out on this solo, unsupported in late summer was a next level experience. The weather was perfect. The summer heat had begun to break with light rain and the leaves had yet to fall. The trails were well-maintained and clearly marked, making navigation seamless.
While the natural beauty and wildlife were immense, the run was made more challenging by my fear of encountering a black bear. Fresh paw prints were a constant reminder to exercise caution. Walked a lot and ran slower than I had intended to scan areas and listen carefully. My confidence was tested, and I definitely want to return to this route with friends or with better bear protection in future years.
Despite the apprehension, it was an amazing day. I felt well-prepared with 1L of water and and an energy bar. It was incredible to camp the night before and enjoy a post-run swim in the clear lake waters. I am keen to return, not just to improve my time, but to fully immerse myself in this park without distraction.
