Started 3:25a from Bellingham Bay and biked solo from the sea to helitrope ridge. I took a road bike and the gravel on NF-39 was ok. Ride was smooth, I was chilly in a shirt and shorts given the morning mist. Hands cold enough that I had a hard time getting any fluid/ nutrition but it was sub 3 hrs so meh…
Colton met me at Helitrope Ridge with skis and we hiked up to summit of Mt Baker. At first we were cruising around 2k an hour. Then it was super windy above about 7k and we were slowed down quite a bit due to wind loaded post holing and just having a hard time standing up. We summited at 12:14p
The ski down was mixed: wind blown up high and then maybe 1000k of fun and then water skiing.
I considered biking back to Bellingham like the guys but given that we did this after a full work week (14 total joint surgeries including 5 on Friday) then got up at 1a, it was time to just head home and chill.
Fun effort. I think with better conditions we could shave off an hour or two. I’d like to come back and do what the guys did of sea to summit to sea, fully self supported. Now that is cool. Chapeaux.
