We started our attempt at 6:27 am at the Berkeley green in saranac lake. We made our way to the loj, doing our best to follow the route that the previous FKT holders had. We left our bikes and helmets at the loj and put our running clothes, bags, and shoes in dry bags. We filled our water at the loj, which technically makes this a supported attempt. We swam across the lake from the canoe launch right next to the public dock, and swam to just left of the far outlet, where we transitioned to running, found our way to the heart lake loop, and followed it to the old Marcy dam trail. We followed the old Marcy dam trail to the Marcy dam and continued on the van hoevenberg trail to Marcy. We had a delightful picnic of sun butter sandwiches, ginger snaps, and brownies. After eating our picnic on the summit, we ran back down the way we came, ending up at the same spot on the shore of heart lake. We packed our things back into dry bags, swam back to the canoe launch, and transitioned to biking on the shore of heart lake. We biked to the Berkeley green, where we finished our attempt at 5:01pm. This route was nearly self supported, as we carried all of our food and gear, with the exception of filling water in the ADK Loj. The previous FKT bike route included several small detours off of the main road that we missed, one of which being due to road work blocking us from going that way. We calculated that the total mileage difference with these detours would be .2 miles each way, which would have added 2-3 minutes to our total time. These detours were not essential in the goal of biking to the loj, but we wanted to do our due diligence once we realized that we had missed these turns. Overall this was a fun day in the mountains!! We loved this route!!!
