Started at Hoypus Pt. at 7:35am, wearing my hydration vest loaded with fluids and nutrition for this self-supported attempt. There was a slight headwind for the entirety of the day, but not enough to be a serious deterrent. The first 21 miles ticked by quickly and I made it to the first refueling point at the gas station in Coupeville in good time. Refilled the hydration vest bladders with water and electrolytes, got a Coke and candy bar and kept moving well. Around mile 25 I was hitting the first "wall" of the day and was working hard to get a sandwich down to keep my calorie input where I needed it. At mile 33, I stopped in Greenbank for more water and soda refills, and got a bag of chips. After a couple more miles, I had settled into the groove again and was running smoothly. At mile 40 I stopped at another gas station in Freeland to get more liquids and a Snickers. At mile 45, my family drove past and honked at me on their way to the finish where I would meet them at the end (did not receive any support from them, except a drive by wave :)) At around mile 50 my right foot started hurting pretty badly, so I ended up having to take walking breaks more often for the last few miles. At 4:45pm I made it to the beach and jogged to the southmost point of Possession Point on Whidbey Island, well ahead of my goal time. My wife and kids and brother in law were waiting on the beach with snacks and a beer to celebrate. Great day with a result way better than I had hoped for!
