I spotted this FKT route in December and was super excited to give it a try, considering I had never run much in Point Reyes and had never attempted an FKT! It was easy to convince Cristiana Chen and Elizabeth Prosser to join this adventure!!!
We started out from the Tomales Point Trailhead at 7am, and hiked out to the start of the FKT. We began running south at 8:38am. We saw soooo many elks on the way out and the way back, this was mostly runnable apart from the sandy/outgrown part near the tip of Tomales Point. Back at the Tomales Point Trailhead, our partners were waiting for us, so we could change into road shoes and grab supplies for the road ahead. The beginning of the road section felt nice and flowy but when the heat started rising, we suffered on the concrete. It got hotter than we expected and being so exposed made for a long 14 miles! We alternated running and walking. We met our partners again at the end of Mt Vision road, near the gate, where we switched back to trail running shoes and took time to resupply our packs and eat a lot - we knew we would not see them again until the beach in Bolinas. We headed back out in high spirits, excited to get onto trail and under trees! The section from Mt Vision to Sky Camp was really really hot, but also very pretty. I liked that section a lot. We refilled water at Sky Camp, knowing it would be our last access to water and headed down to Baldy Trail. This was probably the worst section, a combination of overgrowth, high temperatures, poison oak and stinging nettles.
I have almost no memories from the descent to Glen Camp to getting back on the road at the Ridge Trailhead, we were all too focused on not tripping or twisting an ankle under this overgrowth while getting stung by stinging nettles and poison oak!! Getting back onto concrete felt like sweet relief and we couldn't wait to see Bolinas! We jogged down to the beach where our partners where waiting for us and I stopped my watch recording as my feet touched the high tide!
It was such a fun experience and a good way to experience the multiple ecosystems of Point Reyes! Feel free to reach out to me if you want to attempt it!
