This Mont Blanc Chamonix - Chamonix record wasn't only about the time. It was a fabulous adventure. I was also the record held by two great champions; Stéphane Brosse and Pierre Gignoux, my childhood idols, who inspired me to go into ski mountaineering competitions.
I'd always dreamed of attempting this record. Stéphane often talked about it and he hoped it would be Kilian and I who would attempt to beat it. We had always wanted to attempt the record together, united in the effort, roped up and as one, in true mountaineering spirit. But unfortunately Kilian wasn't able to make it, so I started at the church in Chamonix with Thierry Galindo and Filipo Beccari, an Italian friend. Conditions were good and it was a beautiful day. The aim of the day was to do the return trip as quickly as possible, but this wasn't the only goal. My friends accompanied me for the parts on foot then I continued on my own. Thierry waited for me where I changed out of my trainers. The skin up was easy as my friends ( Idriss, Yann, Nico, Bastien...) did it the day before. However the conditions were not easy, it was cold with strong winds, but what do you expect in the mountains?!
This day wasn't all about the stopwatch. I was overcome with emotions as it was the first time I did it alone and Steph was present in my thoughts and I knew he would be happy when I was at the top.
I arrived where I started 5 hours 6 mins later. I was happy and tired. I loved every minute of the journey. I think the time can be improved in better weather conditions. This was a low key event and I deliberately didn't get the media involved because it was more of a personal goal, that brought out deep emotions that are difficult to explain. The record isn't going to change much in the scheme of things, my passion for the mountains will not be shaken. I accept and understand the suspicions, the doubts and I just have one thing to say: come and spend a day with Kilian and I, that way you will understand what it means to be passionate about the mountains, to train hard and to enjoy it.
I can't wait for the nice weather to come back and I'm planning to spend some time at the beach, climbing on the cliffs just above the sea, lounging on the beach and eating ice cream....because that's what life's about too
