Started at El Salto/Canyoncito trail head at 6:46 AM and made the long climb up to Vallecito Mountain then traversed over to Lake Fork Peak then around to Wheeler. Descended Bull of the Woods to Long Canyon. The standard route here goes up Gold Hill trail to summit Gold Hill. However, Gold Hill trail is impassible from the wind storm last fall and likely won't be cleared any time in the future. Thus, I had to descend all the way to Long Canyon trail and then use that to ascend to Gold Hill. This re-route adds about 800 ft of vert and about a mile and half. From Gold Hill, traversed all the way over to Lobo Peak then descended Yerba Canyon trail.
Water is indeed hard to come by since most of the route is a high traverse above tree line. I carried two 500 ml soft flasks and that wasn't really enough but I made it work. There are basically four places to fill up on this route: the creek on Canyoncito (you can access water all the up until about 5 miles in), the creek on Bull of the Woods (in the valley just after the descent and before you climb up to Frazier), the Long Canyon creek (this is one benefit of this route variation), and the creek in Yerba Canyon (there first source of water is a pvc pipe coming out of the hill about a mile into the descent--you'll likely need to utilize this as the traverse from Gold Hill is time consuming and you'll likely be out of water).
The day was hard; I felt fatigued from the start. I also hit my ankle pretty hard on a rock that came loose on the cirque and it swelled up to a golf ball sized bruise initially. It was pretty painful throughout the rest of the day. By the time I was hiking back up Long Canyon I had very little upward momentum. Happily, my descending strength did no desert me as my climbing strength did and I was able to move really well and relatively pain free coming off Gold hill, the Lobo traverse, and the Yerba Canyon descent.
