I had not planned to run the Hume and Hovell in winter but fate would have it that I had to. Sometimes it can get deep snow up on the Buddong ranges and I though gee what are the chances! Well as it happened I hit the snow jackpot and there was a massive dump the day I crested the hill up to Buddong Falls. It was kinda scary kinda fun. I had left out drop boxes along the way so was never far from a feed even if it ended up slower going and yes it was a massive slog to get through that section. Every sapling on the range was now lying down, laden with snow and my route ahead was a field of snowy destruction. It took a mountain of time to get through and they were anxious times, but tenacity paid off and I made it up and over down out of the snowline. From there I just settled in and enjoyed the ride. The trail is a lovely mix of Bush, tall old growth forest, waterfalls, dams, farmland, state forest roads and then the cycle paths of Albury city. You never have time to get bored such is the diversity but there is plenty of opportunity to get cold on this trail in winter so make sure you rug up if your silly enopugh to do it in winter! The trail takes you up a steep look out hill 5 km before then end and then you almost done, following a well worn riverside walking path to the Old explorers tree and the official end of the trail.
