Mt. Begbie (up & down) activity report for 0957 hrs Saturday, August 14th, 2021: starting from centre of parking lot, sub-threshold trail run for ~5.66 km, then transitioned to hike and/or rock scramble and wouldn't start running again until returning to campsite. Filled empty 590 ml bottle at creek just past campsite/outhouse and added two nuun tablets. Past this point there is no dedicated route to bench after the hike up the glacier. The top (~0.5 cm) surface of the glacier had softened since two weeks ago when it was solid ice and you could not physically walk on it, so no need for crampons. I actually had track shoes with 3/8" spikes in my pack which I never used, but made good [necessary] use of the ice axe both up and down the glacier. I'm not one for exposure, so the hike along the bench and rock scramble to the summit both up and down was very cautious, so cautious in fact that Strava didn't even count it as moving time. Summited after 2hrs-47mins-37secs (sorry no camera photos, you know the deal - cutting weight plus it was smoky anyhow) and made my way back down along the spine of the ridge of the main peak. My only mistake was losing my way back down the glacier not being able to relocate my footsteps and because of the crevasses running up and down the glacier and not being able to see too far ahead due to the curvature of the glacier, I ended up back tracking and struggling down between the rock cliff of the main peak and glacier (not idle). Lesson learned for next time being to somehow flag my route up the glacier so I can follow the same path down. Another fill up with water at the creek and finally back to the campsite where I started a controlled free-fall type run down the trail. Stopped the watch at the same starting position in the middle of the parking lot. Last thing: any pseudo-proper endurance athlete could roll out of bed some random Sunday morning hungover and blow this time to smithereens. Oh, and two chocolate chip peanut butter Lara bars somewhere along the way. Peace!
