For some reason, I chose the first hot day of the year to run Baylor Canyon Pass out and back. Not just that, but I originally planned to head out at 6 am but missed my alarm and didn't get to the trailhead until 8. The initial goal was Baylor Canyon + Pinetree Trail to get today's long run in, but decided to just run Baylor Canyon Pass over and back. I am glad I didn't run out of water, but I had packed plenty: 1 lx600mL flask of electrolytes, 1x600 mL water and a bladder of 1000 mL. For snacks, I packed 4 snack bags for each hour I might be out there with Spring Energy, snack sized Snickers, honey packets and slim jim's. During the first 2 miles I kept losing the trail because the cows roam free here and kept ending up on their travel paths. I'd backtrack my way and once I got onto the switchbacks in the 3rd mile it was smooth sailing. Except for the ascent. I knew this was going to be tough, but I thought I was fitter than I am for it. I anticipated finishing in 2.5ish hours but between the heat, elevation gain and hamstrings that didn't want me to bomb the downhills on my way back, the entire run was slower than I'd have liked. I only lost the trail once on the last mile, so that was good. Next time, I will start earlier and be prepared for th false trails and steep climbs.
