Running 380km across the mountains and hills of Wales is a challenge that I had been thinking about for at least 18 months and then on 09 May 2026 it became a reality as I stood at the gates to Conwy Castle with Alex Hamlet as my support runner and Steve and Rich my head of logistics ready to record the start of this Dragons Back Fastest Known Time (FKT) attempt. Crossing the finish line in 75 hours and 39 minutes, over a day faster than the previous FKT, was a relief. For me the FKT wasn't about a time, it was about embracing the journey, the discomfort, the beauty, and the joy of being out in the varied landscapes this route offers with my mates.
One of the highlights for me was simply running through the mountains, hills and ridges with friends. I did not recce a lot of the route so much of the trail was new and a real adventure. Sharing the trails, the sunrises, the nights, and the countless ups and downs reminded me why I love this sport. There's a rhythm to being in the mountains with others who understand the draw of each step forward. The banter, support and camaraderie kept my spirits high even when my body was screaming to stop. The miles felt lighter because I wasn't alone, even when I was alone I knew I was being willed forward by the support team.
This FKT would not have been possible without the incredible support from my friends and family. Coordinating checkpoints at various road crossings, providing a variety of food that might be appealing to me when my stomach at times did not want anything and general logistics across such a long and remote route is no small feat. Knowing that everything was taken care of allowed me to focus entirely on running, on navigating the terrain, and on managing my energy. Voom bars and Haribo Nostalgics became a go to for the last 48 hours along with the Voom neutral carbohydrate sachets. The dedication and teamwork of the support crew reminded me that FKTs are never a solo effort, they are a tapestry woven from the commitment of so many people around you.
Looking back, this FKT was more than a challenge, it was a reminder of what's possible when preparation, training, and planning come together. The mountains challenged me, friends lifted me, and the ultra running family kept me moving forward. Crossing the finish line at Cardiff Castle wasn't a personal victory; it was a celebration of community, resilience, and the wild beauty of Wales. I cannot recommend enough for people to explore some of the less trodden paths in Wales.
