Armed with vast quantities of trail snacks and sandwiches, we set off before sunrise, to run the route onsight*. We were incredibly lucky with the weather for December: although the day started below freezing and probably only reached ~5C all day, we were blessed with the most gorgeous sunrise and clear skies until late afternoon.
The route winds between pretty Suffolk towns and villages, with many listed buildings and churches, plenty to keep you interested. There are no major hills - just a gently undulating character – and regular opportunities to resupply if travelling self-supported.
This is the furthest Matt and I have run together and it was a pleasure to share the experience – I’ll be back next year to have a proper run at this one too.
* Matt and I were due to run the 100k Three Forests Way FKT in mid-November, but unfortunately, he caught Covid a couple of weeks prior. So we picked another date ~six weeks out; a week out, we discussed finding a shorter route as Matt had not been able to train much – so that’s when we decided on the Wool Towns Walk. So no time for reccies but between us we have run ~20% of it over the years.
