After a really strong winter training block and no race opportunities, I needed an idea for something to do to put the training to use. My son, Jason, who has just posted the outright FKT for this route, was the spark and I decided to have a crack at the route unsupported. The encouragement at various points along the way from my wife Louise, and others, was a great morale boost.
Conditions were superb. The pace plan worked well and I managed to keep it fairly even-paced all the way, allowing for the variability in the two hilly sections. The fuel plan was just about OK, but I was burning the last of the fumes in the tank when I finally reached the gates of the Duthie Park.
