This was a spontaneous idea. I’d spent several weeks in the area and was looking for a bit of a “farewell project”: The 109 k WasserWeltenSteig seemed like something I might be able to pull off. So I started in a slight drizzle on Saturday afternoon, hoping the daylight would bring new life to my then-tired legs. I was far too cold to take rest during the night and figured I could just go without sleep, so didn’t take anything except an emergency blanket and a real warm jacket (which I ended up wearing all through the night, as the temperatures went down to around freezing). I had 1.200 ml of water/energy drink with me and have to admit that I not once refilled those bottles at a stream. Shame on me. Food-wise I kept myself fuelled a lot better: I took in a little something every 5 k, using a mix of healthy stuff like fresh fruit, nuts, seeds … and less healthy (but soul-feeding) stuff like mini chocolate bars.
During the dark I missed quite a lot of turns as my view was fixed on the ground and the route marks were high on trees or posts. I always walked/ran all the way back to where I went wrong so to my best knowledge I did not miss a centimetre of the required path. Sometimes the track on my watch and the markings on the path were incongruent, in which case I followed the signs.
All in, the WasserWeltenSteig comes highly recommended as it does connect a lot of worthwhile places of interest that are (as the name does promise) water connected like waterfalls, moores, lakes … It is recommended as a 6-stage-hike and would make a beautiful, relaxed week when done like that.
