On Saturday, April 27, 2024, Samantha (she/her) and Nicole Fyvie (they/she) met at the northern terminus of the Wapack Trail. We dropped a car, traveled to the southern terminus, and begin the thru hike of the Wapack Trail. It was a cool morning that quickly turned warm, with beautiful views from all the peaks. We were delighted well maintained the trail was. Wide stretches and gradual grades allowed us to run and stretch our legs. The colorful signage, toy soldier, and giant cairns, among other features, were fascinating, and the flats between peaks helped keep our legs strong for the final climb up North Pack. The 1.5 mile descent to the parking lot kept us alert, with descending scrambles and slippery leaves, but the short return was a relief after a long but incredible day on trail.
Thru hikers should note that there is a $4 per person fee to hike through Miller State Park, and although this was unexpected, we were relieved that the park offered bottled water for purchase, as the water atop North Pack had not yet been turned on.
