I climbed Mt Meru from the Momella Gate to the summit and back down in one shot. This FKT submission is just for the ascent, as I did not race on the way down. I went with my friend Emmanuel Rocky Mtui, a climbing and safari guide in Tanzania.
I carried all my own food. I resupplied water at the huts and never carried over a liter at a time. I considered the run “supported” because Rocky ran with me most of the way, and because I considered the water at the top hut a commercial source. Even though I got the water for free, the porters carry the water from the first hut.
Highlights of the trip included running past giraffe and water buffalo, seeing monkeys, and the transitions from foggy rainforest to sunny heather to rocky alpine.
