Inspired by a podcast I listened to recently, I took a look at what the FKT scene was like in my area and serendipitously found that Occoneechee Mountain, a park I had been coming to for the past several weeks for hill training, had an uncontested route (in the unsupported male category) ripe for the claiming.
I arrived to the park right as the ranger opened the gate a little before the official opening time, and then after a quick warm-up, set off for a run at 8:03am. Total elapsed time was 54 minutes, 20 seconds. I’m not a very fast runner, and much less so when it comes to trails, so being able to bag an FKT here was an unexpected opportunity.
