I started in Somers and chose to run to Kila and back for a total of about 42 miles. I parked at the boat ramp parking lot for Flathead Lake and then walked south half a mile to where I believe the trail starts. I took a picture of the sign for "The Terraces" which is an apartment or condo right where the trail starts. I decided to do about a 6am start so that I could finish before the heat of the day. I took a picture of where the trail ends in Kila. There is a sign that says "End" where the trail runs into "Smith Lake Road".
I chose to do this unsupported with my running vest and running belt loaded with gels and waters. I had to have a headlamp for the first hour. The trail was not busy and the condition of the trail overall was pretty good. Not a lot of elevation gain. My garmin said about 853 feet of gain and 860 descent. The start time temperature was about 53 degrees and it was a sunny day.
My pacing dropped off the last 11 miles due to dehydration and muscle cramps. I suggest you carry plenty of fluids and electrolytes as I made the mistake of not taking in enough through the week leading up to this attempt and during the morning of. There are no water fountains on the trail but there are a couple of spots where you can find a porta potty.
This trail has some scenic spots but also some very boring more industrial areas. However, this is overall an easy trail to navigate and stay on course. Someone could also easily receive support as the trail follows major roads for most of it.
