The Kungsleden had been on my mind for a long time. Not necessarily as an FKT at first, but as one of those iconic trails that somehow keep calling you back until you eventually have to find out what you're capable of out there.

I started in Abisko on July 8th at 04:51 and reached Hemavan on July 13th at 20:34, finishing the trail in 5 days, 15 hours and 43 minutes.

The attempt was completed self-supported and I was running by myself the entire time. I carried all my gear myself and relied only on publicly available infrastructure along the route, including shops, mountain stations and the official boat crossings that are part of the Kungsleden experience. Water is easy to find everywhere along the whole trail, with only having to carry one bottle.

Over the course of six days, the trail delivered everything I had hoped for:  great weather, long stretches of runnable trail, river valleys, mountains, sleep deprivation, great people, solitude, spectacular light and some of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever moved through.

There were times where everything flowed effortlessly and moments where simply continuing to move forward felt like enough of an achievement, especially on the last two days. The hardest part, though, was probably the logistics, timing all the boat rides, that usually only depart twice a day, as well as rowing across a lake myself. Somewhere in between, the numbers stopped mattering quite as much and the experience itself took over.

A special thank you goes to Liz Derstine, whose previous record set the standard to chase and who followed along and cheered me on throughout the attempt.

The Kungsleden gave me exactly what I came for: an adventure that was bigger than the finish time itself and so much fun!! I highly recommend this trail.

Verification is provided through Garmin watch recordings and Garmin inReach tracking.

Editors note: This FKT has been published as flagged, due to unintended shortening of the route (Missing Stuorajåbba mountain, close to Ammarsnäs).
