Started in the morning at Democrat Point after hiking out from the Robert Moses Golf Course. Stayed on the beach until we returned to field 2 and was able to get onto the pavement. From there we ticked off each of the towns along the island stopping at water fountains in Ocean Beach and Cherry Grove.
We decided to carry all of our food for fueling on our backs to minimize stops along the way. Additionally, we had to deal with some flooding in the towns which made for a fair amount of standing water crossings. We decided after Cherry Grove to stick to running along the southern coast and in the slightly more packed down sand along the water.
At Ho Hum Beach, we refilled our drinks again at the beach stand and set off for the final stretch. We eventually made it to the end after a very slow 7 miles on the sand after Smith’s Point and was picked up at Great Gun Beach. Overall, excellent route and a good mix of sand and boardwalk running which made for a tough challenge in the heat of the summer.
