I started from the Williams Creek trailhead, jogging up to the Cimmarona trailhead and then into the woods. I passed a group of elk hunters about 3 miles in and they assured me that I was safe on the main trail. I was wearing bright running gear and a red vest and I tried to look human at all times, but it was still scary to hear the occasional rifle shot. Once I got over the first pass at about 7 miles I didn't hear any more shots or see anyone for the next ~10 miles. The CDT portion was beautiful and desolate. I hadn't realized there would be a big climb to get to the Williams Creek trail, but I just kept moving, power hiking the ups and jogging anything else. The connection to the WC trail is on that second pass and the views are incredible in all directions. A couple miles down from there I passed a couple hunters, one with a huge bloody elk rack slung over his shoulder. I kept moving, maybe a little quicker... I took a little fall going down a steep section with loose rocks, but no damage. The meadows lined with aspens were glorious, if a bit too dry and brown. I pushed a bit the last few miles, just wanting to be done.
I took about 2 liters of water and had 0.5 left at the end. About 1600 calories in gels, chews, and a Clif bar. Hoka Speedgoat 4 shoes- excellent. Short sleeves most of the time, gloves about half.
I'd like to try this route again with a friend and maybe try to go faster. On my own, I didn't want to push the downs at all for fear of falling and getting hurt miles from anyone.
