After dropping a car at the end of Haystack Road, we began our ascent of the Gale River Trail, opting to summit Galehead Mountain first and eagerly anticipating the wild climb up South Twin - the second steepest climb on the Appalachian Trail and, without a doubt, one of the best views in the White Mountains. Our time would've been faster, had it not been for the blue skies that lended themselves to view the entirety of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. The 1,150 feet of vertical gain in just .8 miles was worth every step and drop of sweat for the panorama. We continued over the North Twin Spur to summit North Twin, before descending the North Twin Trail and negotating a tricky crossing over the Little River. In the end, we opted for wet feet and waded across, letting the icy water cool our tired feet before a brisk trek back to the waiting car spot.
