The Early Birds run the Roman Road
The Roman Road Circular, just outside Conwy, North Wales, proved to be exactly the a perfect blend of challenge and beauty needed to finish the year off!
Our group of six women set out to take on this adventure unsupported, each of us carrying all the kit we needed. It was a testament to teamwork and individual grit as we relied on nothing but each other, our navigation skills, and the contents of our packs. The route, with its historical charm and rugged landscapes, challenged us in ways we didn’t anticipate but rewarded us in ways we’ll never forget.
The Roman Road Circular is a trail steeped in history, with sections following the same pathways that Roman soldiers once marched across. The terrain varies from ancient stone paths to open moorland.
The elevation gains demanded strong legs and steady pacing, as we climbed high into the hills overlooking the Conwy Valley. The ups and downs were relentless at times, and the views at the summits were hard-earned but breathtaking. Rolling hills, vast stretches of heather, and the distant view of the sea accompanied us for much of the way.
Perhaps the toughest section came towards the end, with boggy descents testing our balance and determination. With every squelch of the ground underfoot, we laughed, groaned, and cheered each other on. The final stretch became a reminder of why we love this kind of challenge – it’s not just about speed or records but about shared experience and resilience.
We were lucky with the weather, avoiding the rain that often sweeps across the Welsh hills. Under clear skies, the beauty of the landscape was amplified, and our spirits never faltered. Even when our legs began to tire, the camaraderie between us made this a journey we never wanted to end. Every step of the route, no matter how tough, was filled with joy.
Would we do it again? Absolutely. The Roman Road Circular is a route that has etched itself into our memories, not just for its stunning scenery but for the connection it fostered among us. Whether you're chasing an FKT or just looking for an epic day out in North Wales, this route offers everything – challenge, beauty, and a sense of history underfoot.
To anyone considering taking it on: lace up your trail shoes, prepare for all kinds of terrain (and a lot of mud), and soak in the adventure.
