The Hebridian Way (North-to-South) FKT Report
The Route & Direction:
A brilliant way to explore the Hebrides. I chose to tackle the route North-to-South primarily because the flight times worked out logistically.
Logistics, Fuel & Water:
Knowing that island shops are few, far between, and notorious for early closing times, I packed enough dehydrated meals, a mini stove, and a light sleep system so I wouldn’t have to rely entirely on local stores. Even with that backup, I stopped at every open shop along the way, utilised public water taps, and took an unplanned detour off-route to resupply at Lochmaddy.
Hydration proved to be the trickiest logistical hurdle: there wasn't a lot of running water available to safely purify on the go, which meant managing my supply carefully while already carrying a heavy gear-laden pack.
Pacing & Ferry Strategy:
Because my schedule hinged on the earliest available ferries, my primary pacing target was simply making the departure windows. Any time I managed to "bank" on the road went straight toward eating and grabbing a quick sleep. Ultimately, the strategy paid off—I rolled into the Leverburgh ferry terminal with about 3 hours to spare and hit the Eriskay ferry with roughly 2 hours in hand.
The Terrain & The "Distractions":
The route features plenty of tarmac, but the stretches of countryside nestled in-between are completely stunning. Looking at the time, I’m certain a faster FKT is there for the taking—especially for someone less easily distracted than me. Between stopping constantly for photos and videos, taking a bracing dip in the sea, and stopping to pet every single horse along the way, I definitely left some time out on the course!
Ps. I got very lucky and there was a travelling sauna 100m from the finish point; what a way to finish my journey! If anyone is reading this and is planning their own adventure, Vartesey is a great finish point because the community center opposite the finish has a cafe, toilets and showers (take pound coins with you)!
