This was my third attempt at completing the full course of the notorious five peaks in northern Seoul.
My first attempt, on October 4, 2024, ended early due to sharp IT band pain – likely caused by the many technical uphill sections. The second attempt, on January 31, 2025, was cut short by heavy snowfall and a lack of crampons and additional warm layers. Both times, I had to DNF after descending from Dobongsan.
I began this third attempt around 7:30 a.m. at the trailhead, Baeksemun, heading first toward Buramsan. From there, I continued to mighty Suraksan and descended into the city of Uijeongbu, where I restocked my water supply before climbing Sapesan.
Next, I made my way to Dobongsan, tackling the Y-Valley section before reaching Sinseondae. On the descent toward Uiam, I started feeling the first signs of cramps and fatigue – likely due to dehydration. After arriving in Ui-dong, I restocked my water again before beginning the final major climb to Bukhansan.
Severe calf and hamstring cramps significantly slowed my progress. After a short break at Baekundae, I descended westward past the mountain fortress toward Bulgwang. I finally reached the endpoint near Daeho Apartment shortly after 7 p.m.
This was a self-supported run. I restocked my water supply twice – first at a CU convenience store in Uijeongbu, and later at a 7-Eleven in Ui-dong, Seoul. I carried a variety of snacks, energy gels, and proper food (sandwiches). For additional support, I used Black Diamond Distance Z trekking poles.
