I feel this route is a quintessential central MT mountain run. One I have been wanting to set a time on that may be difficult to challenge. Knowing the route and water sources, and having a fair break in the ominous weather that frequents the range are two huge variables for me on this route. I started off at a descent effort after a nice warm up in the Uhlhorn TH parking area. I had my dog Piper with me as I do on all of my runs. I let Piper pace us all the way through the canyon. Plenty of water crossings for her until the climb to Halfmoon Pass. There's one last water crossing in the meadow where we stopped. In Pipers pack she was carrying, were her two empty soft flasks and I filled them out of the creek for her and stuffed them back in her pack. Filled my empty filter flask aswell and we pushed on for the ridge ascent. Once on the ridge navigation gets toughest. Following cairns you can see off in the distance until finally reaching West Peak where I made my descent down the Grandview trail. Towards the bottom and as I neared closer to the lake I knew there are multiple junctions so I took the most direct route to the Chrystal Lake day use area and tagged the asphalt before stopping my watch. I would first like to challenge all Montana runners on this route as I feel its a true Montana classic. Also good luck to any dogos going for the canine FKT. Im thinking that one might stick around for awhile.
