What a fun series of hills!
My previously scheduled A-races for the year had all been cancelled for various reasons. The Zion Crossing water sources had dried up. The scheduling didn't work out to take a stab at my prior R2R2R PR. Snow came early in RMNP. My wife and I were traveling to Paso Robles this weekend anyway to see a concert (the inimitable King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard), so I took a look for an FKT in the area and this one sounded fun. No previous supported time existed, so that is the one I established and my wife was kind enough to drive so that I could refuel in between the 5 Morros. It was a cool foggy day, temp was perfect.
Morro 1, Black Hill - I set off down the road, was pretty happy with my time up the hill, but took two wrong turns, one of which added 0.7 miles and a couple hundred feet of vert before I'd realized my mistake. Oops!
Morro 2, Cerro Cabrillo - This path starts off fairly gradual, but it does turn into a minor scramble at the end. It was getting very foggy at this point. The only pic I took the whole day was a selfie at the top of Cerro Cabrillo to show just how dense the fog was. I was happy with my pace on the way down.
Morro 3, Bishop Peak - It had started drizzling by this point, but the trail was still fairly busy with hikers. That made for a couple of stops on the descent so we could pass each other. The Vibram on my shoes proved clutch, since there is a bit of rock hopping and the drizzle probably made it kind of slick.
Morro 4, Cerro San Luis - The weather was starting to clear up by now. This Morro was my favorite, gradual incline and great views all around. I was happy with my effort on this one since my legs were starting to fatigue a bit.
Morro 5, Islay Hill - Final stretch and I really struggled to persist with the running on this one, despite it being the shorts hill of the day. Super cool and weird cow statue on the top! Very slow descent as well, legs just did not want to move.
Total running time = 2hr28m
Drive time = 1hr5m
Total = 3hr33m
The uploaded Caltopo track is my track that includes the entire day, driving and all. The other files/links are for the 5 individual Morros.
