Set off from Scalby Mills at first light on Saturday morning. There was nothing obvious as the official starting point of the route so I made it the 'recycling fish' just outside the Sea Life Centre. The route isn't very well marked and the GPX file takes you from point to point rather than along footpaths so requires a little bit of navigation. The way is fairly easy going, holding height for long stretches. It was sunny, no rain, but a strong headwind. I had planned to make the most of the few village pubs that intersect the route but found I was carrying enough water and food to go straight through. From 45km my knee began to hurt - return of the ITB - so hhobbled the last 35km. My watch clocked in at a total of 80km after a small victory lap around the Helmsley market square. Its definitely not 74km anyway.. Unsupported effort, carried all food and water, no-one joined me for any distance - just the drop off and pick up at either end.
