I ran to Volcán Barú on April 13th, 2025, starting at 4:43 AM. About 1 kilometer after the starting point, there is a checkpoint where you need to check in by writing your name and ID. Make sure to pay the $5 admission fee online in advance through their official website.
I ran alone and carried 1 liter of water and some nuts. I used a headlamp until sunrise. The trail is not technical. It is wide, clearly marked, and easy to follow, so it is difficult to go the wrong way.
I did not see anyone on the way up and reached the summit without meeting another person. At the top, it was foggy, so there was not much of a view. I took a couple of photos and then started my run back down.
It was not as cold as I had read beforehand, but it was quite windy at the summit. I recommend bringing a jacket if you plan to spend a lot of time there.
