Description

The GR 5 is a GR footpath that starts in the Netherlands, crosses Belgium and Luxembourg before crossing France from north to south. It is part of the European walking route E2. This trail is famous for its route through the French Alps from Lake Geneva to Nice called Grande Traversée des Alpes.

The GR5 begins at the North Sea and joins the Mediterranean Sea having traveled a distance of 2200 km. It is a long-distance hiking route which was established at the end of the 1940s thanks to the work of the French hiking federation.

The idea of setting up this trail is not new, but began in the late 1930s with various Touring clubs. For this project, a collaboration was started with Maurice Cosyn, recognized for his expertise and his development of major roads through French territory.

Today, the GR5 is still recognized as a quality hiking route thanks to the meticulous work of its predecessors.
