A bit of an impromptu attempt on this one! Got to the trail head and decided it was a peak bagging kind of day. I've gotten a good look at Atlantic Peak from just about every angle, but never made it to the top. The first 5 miles to Christina Lake was pretty chill and flat, though by no means a buffed out trail - no shortage of loose rock, as is pretty typical of the Southern Winds trails. Heading to Lower Atlantic Lake gains a little more elevation, but the climbing starts in earnest after departing the lake and heading up the ridge towards the peak. Plenty of talus hopping, but generally pretty solid rock. Moving up the ridge, you hit at least two false summits before the final push to the top.
The summit offers delightful views of Temple and Wind River Peak, and the barren upper cirque of Atlantic Canyon. I took a slightly different route on the way down, dropping almost immediately off the ridge towards Upper Atlantic Lake, which was rough going at first, but after reaching the lake, made faster progress. Hard to say if this would have been a faster ascent, but variety is never a bad thing! Great day out in the Winds!
