Description

Atlantic Peak (12,490') is the last major summit on the southern end of the Wind River Range before the mountains give way to the barren hills of South Pass. It is also the high point of the region south of Wind River Peak/Temple Peak, and offers great views north towards the aforementioned peaks, as well as the Atlantic Canyon cirque.

It can be approached either from the Fiddler's Lake trailhead, or the Louis Lake trailhead. Louis Lake is (probably) a slightly shorter route, but a longer drive from Lander, and spends considerably more time on 4WD roads rather than singletrack trail. Both routes join at Gustav Lake, and head up towards Lower Atlantic Lake from there. On reaching Atlantic Lake, there are two ascent options - immediately head up the large ridge on hiker's left, and follow the ridgeline up towards the peak, or follow the valley bottom up to Windy Lake and Upper Atlantic Lake, then head up the steep talus slope on the south side of the cirque towards the peak.

The submitted GPX shows the route from Fiddler's, because more singletrack and less 4WD road sounded much more enticing on the day than saving a mile or two of distance!!
