I lived in Mesa for a short time 9 years ago, and used to love running in the Superstitions. I was drawn to the rugged mountains and solitude of the trails in the Superstitions. After moving away, I always regretted not running the entire line that is the Superstition Ridgeline. I hiked it with family and ran multiple variations of out and backs, but never ran the entire route. So when we decided to visit the area for spring break, I knew I had to run the ridgeline.
The day started out cool and cloudy which made for perfect conditions heading up Siphon draw and over the first miles along the ridge. I made it up the Flatiron climb in about 46 minutes and was feeling really good. The goal for the day was to keep a steady effort, trying for a good time but making sure it was still an enjoyable pace. I wanted to enjoy the views and take some pictures along the way. Since I hadn't been on the trail in 9 years, I was slowed by trying to navigate the sometimes hard to follow trail. I referenced the GAIA map on my phone and probably stopped for too many pictures, but it was a beautiful day out there! It started to get sunny and a bit warm towards the end, but overall the weather was great. My legs were feeling good as I began the final descent to the Carney Springs TH. I love the downhills, so I tried to push the final descent which was tough due to the steep and rocky trail. I arrived at the Carney Springs trailhead after 2:41:10.
This is such a cool line, I wanted to go back and try it again! That will have to wait for another trip though, may have to do the out and back next time.
