I underestimated how hard road running is (I run mainly trails). You have to be careful at 3 bridges where you must go to the other side of the canal, otherwise you end up having to come back, as it happened to me exactly 3 times 😅. It is a beautiful canal, with all the locks, barges and bridges, even the Dublin part is stunning, which I didn't expect. There aren't many places on the canal where you can top up your water or buy food and drinks. The trail turns into grass after Newbridge and is rarely tarmacked to Edenderry, which is good on the body, but really tricky on the ankles. From Edenderry on is all either gravel or tarmac. There are still some works going on in parts of the Way. All together I had a great day running, a bit disappointed I didn't do it faster, but my hips were in bits after 60km so it was either push and Dnf or adjust the pace and get to Shannon Harbour, I chose the latter. 😊
