I went out to attempt the Zoar FKT today with measured confidence but comforted by the fact that today’s heat index was a good 10° lower than my recon run two weeks back. Although probably unnecessary for a 6.5 mile loop, I was eager to try out my fancy new running bottle from Jeff and even brought an energy chew for fun. With painful memories from Tuesday’s FKT attempt still looming in my mind, I tried to remain somewhat restrained the first two miles, but after feeling in surprisingly good shape after ascending the stone staircase, I figured I could turn things up a notch. By the time I passed the highest point, I was having a blast leaping across rocks and scrambling up little hills. As expected, I only ended up drinking two quick squirts of water, but psychologically it ended up being a big help knowing that it was always there if needed. Thanks again to Jeff for the awesome gift, I will definitely be using it again in the future. The obligatory quick dip in the lake afterwards was very welcome as always.
