Before the run, I parked my car around the 10.5-11 mile mark, about halfway, for a makeshift aidstation at Family Dollar on Danielson Pike. I started the route at 9a sharp with a goal to finish in seven hours. The course is all variable hills, starting at the Narragansett bay in Providence and ending at the Jerimoth hill in western RI. It was a hot day, about 85 or more degrees at the hottest point, with lots of sun exposure. The early course goes through urban areas, such as central Providence, along I95, then across the interstate to the Federal Hill Neighborhood. From there the route weaves through the Olneyville and Silver Lake neighborhoods. After a sharp incline up Sunset Ave, the route begins a long slow two-ish mile incline up Central Ave and onto Bishop Hill Rd. I hit the halfway point on goal pace, grabbed a snack, filled up my bottles, and set out for the back half within about 6-7 minutes. From there it's all rolling hills as the route navigates toward the peak. I admittedly had a tough time with the last three miles and was grateful to stop at JPs General Store for some cold water, about a mile from the finish. The route is very exposed on the roads, so I recommend that slower individuals pack water for both hydration and topical cooling. I made it to the final tenth of a mile with seconds to spare and had trouble finding the exact finish, so I believe I may have gone an extra tenth of a mile. In any case, I made it to the clearing and was able to find the high point ground medallion markers. Overall it was a great experience and I got to see the variable terrain of my home state.
