I decided to attempt the female, unsupported FKT of the Roan Highlands section of the AT based off of a running friend's suggestion. This is a beautiful section of the AT and I highly recommend it. I started at Iron Mountain Gap at 6:30am, running alone, and carrying all of my own water and food. I lost time at the Roan High Knob shelter looking for the spring (I don't recommend that water stop), so I filled up all of my soft flasks (containing filters) at the Cravers Gap spring (still going in July!) and again at a spring after descending Little Hump Mountain. It was a humid, warm day and I needed every drop of water in the 2-liter bladder on my back throughout the attempt, yet it was heavy in the beginning and I likely will not bring it again.
Due to my running schedule, I attempted this in July knowing there would be potential "summer obstacles" and I will consider an April/May attempt in the future. The trail was overgrown on Little Hump, Hump, and Doll Flatts to where I knew my feet were on the trail, yet I couldn't see them to navigate the narrowness and occasional rocks. I also briefly sought shelter from an incoming summer storm on Hump Mountain. I still enjoyed the day and was grateful for the opportunity. Thank you to Anthony Groft and Gavin Rumble for such helpful and detailed information on this route. I look forward to attempting this route again soon!
