I started at 5:37pm on Tuesday February 3, and finished 18 hours and 12 minutes later.
Near Kona, the shoulder was very very narrow, less than 24 inches at times and I had some concerns about the traffic but the shoulder was only narrow for the first few miles and that was all in daylight so it was okay!
I set the whole event up to be self-supported. But my thighs started to chafe like mad super early on, and I begged my partner to come bring me longer shorts, which he did, but it cost me the self-supported designation. But that’s okay, I felt way better with the Salewas. (Thanks, Davis!)
I only used 3 drop bags. One at mile 25, then mile 43, and then the visitor center.
My last drop bag at the visitor center was too light. I meant to add some bigger savory food that I had written on my list but I forgot and I felt that undernourishment hard in those last 8 miles.
Summit was COLD and WINDY! I could have added another layer to my final drop bag.
All in all, it went exceptionally well. I’m so very proud of myself and what I’ve accomplished!
I enjoyed running all through the night. The moon was so bright that I didn’t even need my headlamp (unless there was an oncoming car).
So very excited to have done this route!! Epic adventure. :)
