To start, we were carrying about 1.8 liters total, two little bags of trail mix and some epic bars. We started hiking at 9:12, and set off at quite a reasonable pace (for us) considering that the trail is often pretty rough and eroded for the first 2.5 miles. We took this route counterclockwise, so took a right at the junction. The streams were all running well leading towards Hunts Creek, and Hunts Creek was absolutely raging. On the climb, there were a few large logs down which required some interesting acrobatics in order to get over. There were some streams higher up that were also still running, and there was plenty of water in Hunts Cove. The wildflowers were beautiful, especially lower in the cove. Higher in the cove, the snow had melted off fairly recently so most of the wildflowers were heather. The connector between Hanks Lake and the PCT was a bit steep and faint, but overall not too bad. We filtered about .75 liters each at delightful little brook towards the top of the cove. The PCT was in amazing condition and we started jogging a little bit. A few minutes past Shale Lake, I got bit on the leg by something that looked like a mosquito larger than a horsefly, but I didn't have time to see it after dislodging it and taking off down the trail at high speed. That was one of two bites I got on the whole trip though, which was quite surprising, I normally associate late July in the cascades with horrific mosquitoes. The descent was a little bit rocky, so we jogged a few sections but primarily hiked. Our goal was 5 hours and because of a slight miscalculation I'd made in our splits, I thought that we weren't going to make it. Once the PCT got into the thicker forest the tread became perfect for running so we ended up making up a lot of time there. We continued to run down the Hunts Creek trail, before I started getting some pain in my feet (which are not yet accustomed to much running) and had to slow down. Amazingly, we finished with 10 minutes to spare. I think that there are probably a number of people who have run this route faster than us, but this was a very solid push for us and I'm proud enough of it to put it up here. In the future, a lot of time could be shaved off by going harder on the climb up Hunts Creek, as well as running more of the PCT segment, particularly up higher.
