Only 2 weeks after running Mountain Lakes 100 in Oregon, I was lucky enough to find myself with an opportunity to visit Catalina. It took some creative planning, but I figured out the ferry logistics to give me enough time to complete the entire 38-mile Trans Catalina Trail despite my tired body. I took the 2pm ferry on Thursday from Long Beach, arriving around 3:15pm. I started my watch at 3:23pm as I wound my way through town, following both the GPX file and the FarOut app's track. A bit after the first long climb, I ran into a bison quickly followed by a rattlesnake; both added some time to ensure safe passage. I power hiked to Black Jack Campground where I stayed the night, cowboy camping under the stars. I was up at 3:45am and moving again by 4:15am; I made it to Two Harbors by 8:50am where I added a bit of distance to get water from the bathroom, though I found the picnic area's water spigot on right by the trail before I began the last long climb. I was glad of my decision to do the loop in a clockwise direction, putting the big climb earlier in the day before the heat set in; regardless, it was very hot and exposed. Then it was a very steep descent to Parson's Landing. After that, I was quite glad for the smoother road walking, though I had to get off the road a number of times to avoid speeding pick-up trucks. I arrived back at Two Harbors at 1:55pm, completing the TCT in 13:37:41 moving time, and 22:31:51 total time.
