While planting Whitebark pine trees in the Absorka mountains, north of Dubois, Downs Mountain and the Continental glacier caught my attention. I decided then that if good weather coincided with a day off I would go try and summit Downs. On October 7 I got a day off and the weather was perfect so off I went. I chose the old glacier trail which meant I would need to cross Torrey Creek to start the day. I ran to the creek took off my shoes and crossed barefoot. On the return across I left my shoes on… Not necessarily chasing an fkt but hurrying to be home in time for kid pickups and soccer practice, I kept a steady pace. I lost some time as I was on sighting the route and using my phone for navigation but all in all it went pretty smoothly without any major detours.
